Stream Monitoring
The Storm Water Quality Division conducts monitoring programs that detect pollution in our streams and storm sewers. These programs vary from detection and tracking of illicit discharges, to monitoring the baseline water chemistry and biological communities living within our stream systems. Samples are also acquired during rainstorms, which allow us to monitor what pollutants are collecting and washing off during runoff periods.

Floatables Debris Program
Floatable debris, or what most people call garbage is blown, discarded and washed into the City storm drains during rainstorms. Storm water is not treated before it flows to our lakes, streams and other wetlands. Oklahoma City's floatable debris programs include end-of-pipe netting to remove debris, over 20 storm drain inserts that catch debris before entering the drainage system and debris barriers on the Oklahoma River which collect the debris and hold until it can be disposed of properly. The barriers help us more efficiently manage garbage on the Oklahoma River by capturing at specific locations versus collecting over the entire river.

Industrial and Construction Permitting
The Storm Water Quality Management Division inspects industrial and construction locations to insure that storm water discharges meet the Federal Clean Water Act requirements. They address onsite concerns such as material storage and disposal, sediment and erosion control and ensure that process materials are not accumulating and washing off during runoff periods.

Water Quality workshops
The Storm Water Quality Division offers workshops for construction contractors, engineers, developers, pesticide applicators, industrial facility managers and homeowners to learn about erosion management, permitting requirements and best management practices. Call 297-1774 for a schedule of workshops.

School CurbSmart presentations
CurbSmart is a program targeted at schools and summer programs designed to educate Oklahoma City's youth about storm water protection. Components include our mascot, Wayne Drop, annual outdoor workshops, poster contests, demonstrations, displays and class programs.

Curbs to Creeks program
Curbs to Creeks is a volunteer project to mark storm drains in Oklahoma City with curb markers. If you would like to help keep our water clean and healthy, call the Curbs to Creeks project coordinator at 297-1774. You’ll receive a free kit that contains curb markers, gloves and instructions on how to mark storm water drains.
